The 2018 Special Olympics Bowling Championships was a national Special Olympics event hosted by Prince Edward Island. The challenge in designing its logo was to make sure that it reflected the sport, the organization, the host province, and that it made participants from across Canada feel welcome. It also had to serve as a keepsake of the event. With all this in mind, we deliberately avoided any aspect of the Team PEI logo which highlights the Confederation Bridge, a fitting symbol for both the team and for the Island, but decidedly connected with Team PEI specifically.
To further a welcoming theme, we used bright and friendly, flowing and inviting colours and lines, which also served to visually represent PEI without placing it front and centre. This worked in aid of showcasing the Island in an abstract and less conventional manner than simply incorporating an outline of the province into the design. By reflecting PEI through its red, green and blue, and suggesting the movement and shape of our sky, water, fields and hills through the use of curves, we also suggested the movement required by the sport of bowling.
